Crowds in Copenhagen flocked to see Frederik X made King of the Nordic nation after Queen Margrethe, 83, above, signed a historic abdication.
Margrethe, the primary Danish monarch to surrender the throne voluntarily in almost 900 years, abdicated for well being causes.
Frederik, 55, was proclaimed King by prime minister Mette Frederiksen from the balcony of Christiansborg Palace.
He was then joined by his Australian-born spouse Queen Mary, 51, and their kids, Christian, 18, Isabella, 16, and 13-year-old twins Vincent and Josephine. Frederik instructed the gang: “My hope is to change into a unifying king of tomorrow.
“It’s a activity I’ve approached all my life.”
And in a loving tribute to Mary, he mentioned: “I need to return the belief I meet. I want belief from my beloved spouse, you and that which is bigger than us.”
Aussie Judy Langtree, who travelled from Brisbane along with her daughter, mentioned of Mary: “I believe it’s good that she’s not from royalty and has a standard Australian background.
“She’s from a middle-class background and we’re too.”
Denmark’s monarchy traces its origins to Tenth-century Viking king Gorm the Outdated – making it the oldest in Europe and one of many world’s earliest.
Its duties right now are largely ceremonial.
