The Ministry of Agriculture has introduced intensified efforts to broaden date farming in Eritrea. Originating within the late Nineties with a number of devoted farmers within the Sheib sub-zone, date farming initially noticed restricted development.
Nonetheless, a big shift occurred in 2017 when the Ministry launched a significant initiative to advertise this agricultural sector within the Northern and Southern Crimson Sea areas. This initiative included offering specialised coaching to farmers and introducing high-quality date seedlings.
Mr. Musie Fekadu, Head of Bio-Know-how on the Nationwide Agricultural Analysis Institute and coordinator of the date farming venture, reported substantial progress. Roughly 23,000 date bushes have been efficiently planted and are presently thriving. Mr. Musie highlighted that every tree yields between 75 to 200 kilograms of dates.
Moreover, Mr. Musie talked about that on the seventh Worldwide Date Summit held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in 2022, Eritrea proudly grew to become the forty first member of the Date Producing and Processing Nations, marking a big milestone in its agricultural journey.
Trying forward, Mr. Musie revealed formidable plans to extend the variety of date bushes within the focused areas to 300,000 by 2030. This enlargement goals to bolster Eritrea’s place within the world date market and contribute considerably to the nation’s agricultural output.
