Rome and Milan ban pro-Palestinian rallies on Holocaust Remembrance Da

Authorities order pro-Palestinian rallies in Rome and Milan to be rescheduled.

Police chiefs have banned pro-Palestinian rallies from happening in Rome and Milan on Saturday 27 January, Holocaust Remembrance Day, following calls from the Jewish neighborhood in Italy and the Italian authorities.

The order for the marches to be rescheduled to a different date, on the advice of Italy’s inside minister Matteo Piantedosi, was backed by the mayors of each cities.

Piantedosi on Friday mentioned that whereas the best to reveal should be assured, on this case it should be “reconciled” with the importance of the Giorno della Memoria, including that he was “assured” a compromise answer could be reached.

Earlier this week the president of Rome’s Jewish neighborhood, Victor Fadlun, mentioned that Saturday’s deliberate “anti-Semitic march” could be a “defeat for everybody” if it went forward, claiming that it will “reopen the wound of the Holocaust” and create a threat for “public order and safety”.

Fadlun’s calls have been backed by his counterpart in Milan, Walker Meghnagi, who described a pro-Palestinian rally deliberate in Milan on Saturday as “a disturbing initiative”.

The Palestinesi d’Italia affiliation on Friday mentioned it’s going to respect the police order, shifting its demonstration in Milan to Sunday, and scheduling a press convention on Saturday afternoon to stipulate its causes.

Nonetheless the Giovani Palestinesi group advised information company ANSA that it will defy the order and go forward with its demonstration in Milan on Saturday, with protesters additionally more likely to take to the streets in Rome.

“This can be very critical that the Jewish neighborhood impacts a call already taken by the competent authority that authorised the rally”, Maya Issa, president of the Palestinian College students Motion advised ANSA, describing it as “a call that will increase anger”.

Issa mentioned the college students would “reserve the best to determine” whether or not to reveal on Sunday “however we can not assure that there won’t be individuals who will take to the streets” on Saturday.
